A local library marked its 30th anniversary this month hosting a celebration coffee morning with the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and local school children, as well as a number of events throughout the next few weeks.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said: “I’m delighted we’re celebrating thirty years since Chapeltown Library opened its doors to the local community. The library is at the heart of this community, and it’s great to see how the range of activities and services has grown since the 1980s. The events on offer over the next few weeks really show that local libraries have something for everyone, whatever your age.”

The celebration coffee morning held on 14 November saw over 300 families and children join in the celebrations and gave an opportunity for visitors old and new to have a get together, meet the Lord Mayor and enjoy the entertainment from Ecclesfield School’s choir and band. There was a display of books, CDs and films from 1987 as a reminder of what was popular in the library 30 years ago.

Joining in the celebrations are author Henry Southern, library user for over 30 years and member of Chapeltown Library’s writing group with the Lord Mayor Cllr Anne Murphy, Michael Appleby, Chairman of Ecclesfield Parish Council and Cllr Peter Price who opened the library in 1987, together with staff and users, old and new.

Food writer and television presenter Mary Berry also sent her congratulations after Chapeltown Chatterbooks reading group for 7-10 year olds designed their own cake recipes for Mary.

Other highlights from the month of events include:

• Reading Aloud – a Christmas Carol. Staff will read Charles Dickens’ seasonal story over four Mondays from 13 November

• A Christmas Celebration with Chapeltown and High Green Schools with children performing seasonal entertainment on 8 December.
