Council to recruit more apprentices

23 June 2017

Young people are invited to a recruitment day as Sheffield City Council continues its drive to recruit future leaders through apprenticeships.

The open day is being held on Friday 30 June at Sheffield Town Hall from 10am until 1pm.

Opportunities are available in different areas of the council, including council housing, customer services, business support, and parks and countryside.  The council housing service also has traineeship opportunities in estate services, income management, surveying and neighbourhood support.

Anika Zahman, an 18-year-old from Fir Vale, became a council housing apprentice in October 2015 and later gained a permanent position. She said: “I would encourage ambitious young people to go for an apprenticeship. It’s great to be able to gain experience in the world of work, earning whilst you are learning and completing important qualifications.

“To start with I was quite a nervous character but I am now happy to face new challenges and meet new people.

“An unexpected bonus for me was helping to promote the housing apprenticeship scheme, telling my story to other young people during talks in schools.”

Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said: “We are proud about how many of our young people go on to permanent employment following their apprenticeship with the council.

“It’s great to see them grow in confidence, gaining new skills and qualifications – and delivering an important service to the people of Sheffield. That’s why we continue to invest in apprenticeships, and look forward to taking more on.”
