Council services during winter weather

28 February 2018

Update on roads, bins, schools and council housing repairs

As snowfall and low temperatures are expected to continue throughout the day,  council services are working around the clock with partners to help keep Sheffield moving and working.

  • Streets Ahead – the highway contract run by Amey on behalf of Sheffield City Council is working to reduce the risk of snow and ice forming on the highway.
  • The council’s housing team is prioritising the most urgent council housing repairs today. The  teams are rearranging non urgent repairs with customers directly.
  • The council is helping vulnerable people today in the severe weather, if you are worried about a vulnerable person you know please contact the council using 0114 2734567.
  • Many schools across the city have closed or have opened later today. If any residents are unsure about whether their local school is opening,  they are advised that  they should check directly with the school first.
  • Council partners Veolia always aim to collect bins as normal in bad weather, however conditions on side roads have made it difficult to collect some bins. Veolia are asking residents put their bins out as usual. We may not be able to collect it at the normal time but will aim to collect it as soon as possible.

Lynsey Connelly, Amey Highways Operations Manager said: “We monitor the weather and road conditions 24/7 and overnight we have seen significant snowfall across the city. All our gritters, including Farmers who help us the higher routes, have been out gritting through the night and will be gritting throughout the day.”

“We have teams out clearing and gritting key pedestrian routes and over 2,000 grit bins for members of the public to use, which we keep topped up with grit. If during this busy period, your local grit bin requires refilling please contact us.”
