Council’s cleaners to benefit from living wage

Sheffield City Council has confirmed its commitment to the Living Wage in its cleaning services contract now out for re-tender.

A key requirement of this contract is for the supplier to pay their staff the Foundation Living Wage from 1 April 2016. This is Sheffield’s living wage at £8.25, which is currently £1.05 more than the Government’s proposed national living wage due to be introduced in April.

The deadline for receipt of the tenders is Monday 18 January. The Council will then evaluate the submissions and hope to be able to award the contract to the preferred supplier by early March.

It is anticipated that the contract will be for a three year period; commencing 1 July 2016 and ending 30 June 2019, although there is an option to extend the contract by a further 12 months.

Councillor Ben Curran, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources and Finance said: “The Living Wage is important in building a more inclusive economy, where low earners are able to afford to have a reasonable standard of living from their pay.

“The Council already pays our directly employed staff the Living Wage, but we want to make sure even more people in the city benefit from the Living Wage. Contracts with the Council’s external providers are an important part of this, so we have included a requirement for them to pay the Living Wage in the tender documents for this contract.”
