Meet the influential new companies choosing to expand in Sheffield

Sheffield has everything we need – why would we locate our business anywhere else?

That’s the message from three influential new IT and tech companies that have put down roots in Sheffield, creating 220 jobs with plans to further expand and move to bigger premises across the city in the new year.

The power trio includes Perkbox, which has taken premises on Scotland Street after being named number two in the Startups100 Index of fastest growing start-ups in the UK and was this year selected as a Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies To Work For.

The company, which has plans to expand its Sheffield operation, which it launched in January 2017, from 41 people to more than 100, says that the city was the natural place to be.

Operations Director Wayne Adams said: “Driving over the Parkway, you can see the changes to the city and the cranes on the horizon. Sheffield’s an exciting place to be.

“There are two Universities turning out brilliant graduates who want to stay in the city. The competition is high in places like Leeds but here we can cherry pick the very best and most innovative people who want to be here – you can’t argue with that.”

Founded in 2015, Perkbox has become the UK’s leading voluntary benefits provider. The opening of its Scotland Street office forms part of Perkbox’s national expansion plans following a successful year of business.

Wayne added: “The company’s Sheffield operation will play an integral role in the brand’s future development. Having a base in the north of the country will also help the business to break out of the capital and expand nationwide.”

Perkbox is part of a growing trend that has seen Sheffield become the leading destination for digital and technology companies, with others such as Jet2 and PCM also moving to the city.

The local economy has gained 37,000 jobs since 2014, there are now around 68,000 businesses operating across the city region and 650 multi-national companies.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Innovation at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s brilliant to welcome companies like Perkbox to Sheffield. Sheffield is a great place to do business, for global giants like McLaren Automotive and Boeing, to smaller companies that have a similar sense of ambition.

“Perkbox is one of the leading lights in cloud-based digital technology and puts its employees first and foremost in its thinking. It’s no surprise that it would want to employ people in Sheffield, where it can have access to the very best graduates and young people.

“We are seeing more and more expressions of interest in our inward investment team, and I can’t remember a better six months for companies choosing to come here.

“We can offer something that other cities can’t – two world class universities, the greenest city in the country with enviable skills, talent and infrastructure. I’d like to congratulate these three companies on their success and wish them the very best for 2018.”
