Sheffield feels like a city that really supports creative people

Lucy Ledger, Director of Lucy Ledger Ltd explains how she managed to mix creativity with business.

What were your ambitions?

From a very young age I always knew I wanted to be an artist. I was never sure of the exact profession but I spent all my time creating – my hero was Tony Hart and I used to send my work to the Hartbeat gallery.

What Support did you get to set up your business?

I’ve had a lot of support from my family. Finding the right path took time. I was an average student, and even though I had talent I never really got high grades and didn’t get the support I needed from my teachers.

When I left education I put my dreams of being an artist on hold but as my career progressed, it took me closer to a creative path and I started to really believe that I could set up my own business. It took ten years to find my true style and a viable product offering – but when I did, it all just clicked.

Why did you choose to open your business in Sheffield?

I came here to work after university fifteen years ago and never left! I love living in Sheffield and have found a lot of support when setting up and growing my business – it feels like a city that really supports creative people. Sheffield is also a fantastic location for travel – I can be in the centre of London in 2 hours and that really is an asset to my business.  I have some clear ambitions and vision for the business and hope to see the brand expand and grow, especially in exportation.

What is the most challenging thing about your job and what is the most rewarding?

The most challenging thing is that you are responsible for every decision – there is no boss you can refer to! You have to make mistakes and learn from them – it’s the only way to improve.

Some days when you are feeling unsure and have wavering confidence you have to find it in yourself to turn things around and keep going, which can be hard!

The most rewarding aspect is that I get to do what I love every day – it’s something I make sure I never take for granted. When I walk into the studio, I just feel a wave of happiness – that definitely outweighs any challenges that I may face along the way.

If you were giving careers advice to your 14 year-old self, what would you say?

Take on board what people say – use it to improve and develop but never let it steer you away from your true path. Follow your dreams, listen to your instincts and never stop learning.
