Interns gain valuable work experience with Streets Ahead

Thursday 2  March 2017

Streets Ahead has joined forces with Sheffield College to launch an exciting Supported Internship Programme at its Olive Grove depot in Sheffield.

Six young people from Sheffield, who all have learning or physical disabilities, and are aged between 16 and 24, joined the Streets Ahead team in January to gain skills in a variety of areas including IT, commercial, office support for highway maintenance, vehicle fleet and stores.

The aim of the Supported Internship Programme is to change the lives of young people with learning and physical disabilities by helping them obtain vital work experience whilst demonstrating they have the skills and willingness required for today’s working environment.

As well as helping to expand their CV, it will also help change perceptions and instil confidence amongst the individuals’ family members, employers and employees in their ability to work.

David Lincoln, a job coach for Sheffield College, is based on site and works with the Streets Ahead teams to ensure there is a good match between the skills and ability of the intern and the demands of the job. He will also be supporting interns throughout their placement.

David said: “It is great to see the interns gaining confidence and learning new skills. The experiences will hopefully help them to secure employment in the future.”

Helen Johnson, Streets Ahead’s Community and Employee Engagement Officer added, “We are extremely proud and delighted that the interns are now working with us and overcoming challenges, not just in a working environment, but also within social situations. They have settled in well and are already making a great contribution to our day to day work.”

Each intern will undertake a study programme starting last September and finishing in July 2017 which is personalised for their individual needs and includes different employability skills as well as the chance to study for relevant qualifications in English and Maths.

Councillor for the Environment at Sheffield City Council, Bryan Lodge said, “It’s brilliant to see these young Sheffield interns gaining valuable work experience with Streets Ahead which will equip them for their working future.

“This programme is vital for improving the skill set and experience of Sheffield’s young workers. The skills they are learning today will be of benefit to them, both when securing a job and, throughout their career.”
