Temporary arrangements for Tinsley Library

24 February 2016

Library services in Tinsley are changing as Sheffield City Council’s lease on the current building comes to an end. Alternative arrangements have been made from the end of February once the council comes out of the building, before a new base is found for a voluntary-run service.

Temporary arrangements include a local book drop off and collection point at Tinsley Forum on Bawtry Road, just along from the library building. They also include the promotion of the Home Library Service and visits by the Little Library service for children. Library users are also able to join Brinsworth library, in Rotherham, which is 1.5 miles away and on a bus route.

Local volunteers have come forward in Tinsley to help run a future service from a new base and the council is working with them. Volunteers already run 15 other libraries in Sheffield, where communities stepped in after Government cuts meant the council could no longer afford to run all branches.

The plan for Tinsley Library was first announced in the council’s Cabinet Report of February 2014 – ‘The Future of Sheffield’s Library Services.’

Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards, acting cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Sheffield City Council, said: “Library services in Tinsley are changing but they are not stopping. The really positive news is that we have local volunteers who would like to run the future service and we are working with them.

“We have put alternative arrangements in place at Tinsley Forum until the new volunteer run library is set up, and we have been talking to our customers and the Forum about this. We’re looking to make things as easy as possible for existing library users and are sorry for the disruption this will cause.”

The new drop off and collection point will start from Monday, 29 February. Anyone interested in helping to run Tinsley’s future library service should contact Darrell Porter the Council’s Library Volunteer Co-ordinator on 0114 273 4254.
