The games are on

1 June 2018

Do you fancy saving the world from a deadly disease, designing a stained glass window, or even building the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?

The new Sheffield board game library in the Central Library reading room gives you the chance to do all this and more.  Whether you’re a serious game geek or just curious to see what the burgeoning board game hobby is all about, you’re sure to find something in the collection to take your fancy.

The carefully curated selection of around 50 modern games – including Sagrada, Mysterium, Potion Explosion, Clank!, and Codenames – can now be played for free anytime in the library. And gamers are welcome to socialise as they strategise, talking as much as they like while playing in the reading room.

Players aged 10+ are also encouraged to attend the monthly game night events, run by experienced, passionate staff, which take place on Wednesday evenings from 5.30 until the library closes at 8.00pm.  Upcoming game night dates include 20 June, 18 July, 22 August, and 19 September.

Players must be members of the library to use the board game collection and can join straightaway if they are not.  Signing up is free, quick, and easy and library membership offers a wide range of books, ebooks, music, film, access to computers and other resources for members.

The Sheffield board game library was created following a successful funding bid to The Society of Chief Librarians – Yorkshire and Humber.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said: “The range of creative and fun activities taking place in the Central Library is growing all the time.  We look forward to welcoming gamers to the building and seeing it develop even further as Sheffield’s city centre living room.”
