Thousands flock to Sheffield’s beach to soak up the sun

Wedsnesday 12 August

Sheffield by the Seaside kicked off with roaring success as people gather in the City Centre to enjoy the beach.

As the sun shines over the biggest seaside extravaganza yet, day-trippers from Sheffield and further afield are digging out their buckets and spades to join in the fun.

Sun seekers are being urged to come and enjoy more of the seaside themed attractions in the Peace Gardens which feature an impressive 1930s Helter Skelter and traditional swing boats, as well as crazy golf, various fairground rides and the free sand pit.

To help create the holiday atmosphere there are a range of DJs playing summer tunes, and your typical coastal treats.

With lots on offer and free activities organised by Farrer’s Funfair, visitors can relax from the comfort of a giant seaside deck chair or join in the fun of the fair.

Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of the Council said: “We are really excited that Sheffield offers one of the best temporary seaside attractions in the country. Since it opened last week it has been absolutely packed and we have had some great feedback!

“It’s not only great fun for the children; the beach showcased the city centre to people who have travelled to Sheffield. It’s also showing benefits for traders, in fact, a few businesses have even told us that they have had to take on extra staff at the weekend because of the crowds it is drawing in.”

“I encourage people to come along and join in the traditional seaside fun especially while we have had the weather for it. It would be a shame for anyone to miss out. There is something for everyone!”

On top of the seaside attractions there will extra events and special visitors throughout the month. There will continue to be appearances from some of children’s favourites including the Minions and characters from the much loved Frozen film.

Whatever the weather the seaside will stay in Sheffield until Wednesday 26 August and is open daily from 10am – 6pm. Come on down for a whale of a time!
